Hydro to introduce new billing structure

Residential BC Hydro customers can look forward to a change in billing structure starting next month.

The utility has received approval from the BC Utilities Commission to apply a two-step rate structure to residential customers, effective October 1st.

Under the rate change, consumers will pay one rate for the first 1350 kilowatt hours they use over their two-month billing period, then a higher rate for any additional electricity used.

The rate for the first block of hours is about half a cent less than consumers are currently paying. However, the rate for additional usage is nearly a cent per kilowatt hour higher.

The utility is hoping the new rate structure will encourage British Columbians to reduce their electricity usage, as the 1350 kilowatt hour threshold is slightly lower than current average residential consumption.
