Five Fort St. John residents are safe today after their plane crashed into the South Saskatchewan River last night.
At about 7:30 PM local time on September 17th, Medicine Hat Police received a call from the Medicine Hat Regional Airport informing them that a plane which had taken off from the airport just minutes earlier had lost one of its engines.
The control tower then lost all radio contact with the aircraft. Fortunately, civilian reports of a low flying aircraft helped direct emergency services to the crash site in the South Saskatchewan River.
Four occupants escaped with only minor injuries. A fifth was airlifted to Calgary with non-life-threatening injuries.
The plane, which had been borrowed from NorthStar Ltd. to take some family members to a funeral in Medicine Hat, was destined for Fort St. John.
Transport Canada is continuing to investigate the matter.
