A Fort St. John man has escaped jail time after being found guilty in a car crash on the Coquihalla Highway that killed a young mother in August of 2006.
Baylen Gillis was convicted of dangerous driving causing death, for the head-on crash which killed 36-year-old Secret James of Merritt, and injured her two children, aged two and four.
After a morning session dedicated to final sentencing submissions, Gillis was given a conditional sentence of two years less a day, the first eight months of which is house arrest.
He must also perform 100 hours of community service and has been banned from driving for four years.
In Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, defense lawyer Ann Pollak argued that the 25 year old has taken great strides in rehabilitating himself, that include attending AA meetings and counseling sessions regularly.
