The Child Development Centre will now be able to proceed with their building expansion, thanks to a donation of land from the city.
At a September 8th council meeting, city officials approved a motion to donate portions of city-owned land surrounding the Child Development Centre to facilitate the renovation and expansion of the Centre. The donation represents several months of joint work between the city and the CDC on the expansion, which is being called Project Build-A-Fort.
The CDC says it’s been pressured for space, especially for the last five years, which have seen a considerable expansion of services, but not space. The new expansion will allow the CDC to open additional preschool spots and improve its therapy services.
Penny Gagnon who works at the CDC, says the additional space will also allow for the development of programs for older children. [asset|aid=248|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=Penny Gagnon – Youth_1_Pub.mp3]
Funds for the project have come in part from the fundraising efforts of the Child Development Centre, which hosts an annual talent show in March. The organization also hosted a golf tournament earlier this year that raised $11,000 for the project.
The new wing is expected to be completed by September 2009.
