The Peace River North School District has received an as yet undisclosed amount of provincial funding for a pilot program aimed at supporting immigrant families in Fort St. John.
Called "Settlement Workers In Schools," the program is a partnership between the local school district and the Ministries of Advanced Education and the Attorney-General. SWIS has been in existence for two years in the lower mainland, and this area has been identified for a new wave of funding support based in part on Canadian immigration statistics of the past five years.
Part of the SWIS role will be helping families and the school system with cross-cultural understanding.
