Federal Election-Local Candidates

The first full day of the October 14th federal election campaign opened with Prime Minister Harper and NDP leader Jack Layton, in B-C’s lower mainland.

The Liberals’ Stephane Dion is in Montreal, while Green Party leader Elizabeth May is in Ottawa. Locally there are only two candidates officially nominated in the Prince George/Peace River riding and, both were guests this morning on Moose-FM’s Issues and Answers program.

The NDP has nominated Betty Bekkering of Prince George, a long time environmentalist and labor leader. However, it is the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan which has arguably surfaced, initially at least, as the number one issue of the campaign. Incumbent Tory MP Jay Hill, who has represented the local constituency since 1993 had this to say today, when asked about that… [asset|aid=230|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=Hill- Afghanistan_1_Pub.mp3]

There are 308 ridings being contested in this election and, the Tories have about 85 percent of their candidates nominated. However, at last report the major opposition parties each had only about fifty percent of a full slate.
