A Washington State woman is dead, following an accident this afternoon on the Alaska Highway.
The accident took place at approximately 3:30pm, when RCMP were called to attend a single vehicle collision at Mile 57 of the highway. Witnesses reported seeing a southbound red Chrysler PT Cruiser cross the northbound lane of traffic driving into the ditch where it continued for some distance at highway speed until it collied with a tree.
The driver, a 73 year old female was killed. A 36 year old male passenger from the same area was taken to Fort St. John Hospital with serious injuries.
The investigation continues into what happened after the highway was closed for a short time to allow the investigation to begin. At this time alcohol is not being considered as a factor in the crash and both occupants were wearing a seat belts.
