Fort St. John’s Alaska Highway News may be hit by a strike as soon as next week. As part of the Media Union of BC’s Sterling group of companies, workers will take part in meetings later this week in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek.
At these meetings, it’s believed that that members will participate in a strike vote. Media Union Vice President John Savage says the union has already issued notification of its intent to hold a strike vote. If this vote passes, the group may issue a 72-hour strike notice at any time during the next ninety days.
That would mean unionized employees at the Alaska Highway News could be on the picket lines as soon as Monday. Savage says he still hopes the company will invite union negotiators back to the bargaining table, though he wouldn’t comment on the overall likelihood of a strike.
If there is a strike it would also affect the Dawson Daily News, The Mirror, The Northern Horizon and the Northerner.
