School enrolment continues to plummet in B-C.
Education Minister Shirley Bond says preliminary figures show about 543-thousand students are expected to be in class, when schools reopen next Tuesday.
That’s down by about eight thousand from last year.
The minister isn’t ready yet to consider closing any schools, but, she admits some tough decisions may have to be made, once the final enrolment figures have been tabulated.
Locally, school district 60 officials are hopeful their numbers will remain fairly consistent with last year.
However, given the unpredictable nature of the local economy, Director of Instruction Dave Sloan concedes, they’re pretty well in a wait and see position, with no firm prediction possible.
Last year, the local district enrolment was down slightly but, the drop was nothing compared to what it was in many other jurisdictions.
