Wesley Eugene Belland of Fort St. John is on the new list of 49 Canadians being recognized as bravey award winners. It was back on January 28th of 2005, that he and several co-workers tried to rescue a colleague, who was trapped on a drilling rig near Helmut, northeast of Fort Nelson. The victim was on a burning platform and having trouble with his harness. Eventually he freed himself and despite the danger, the crew remained with him, holding a guide wire which he tried to use to escape. However, during his descent he fell and was fatally injured. The bravery awards will be presented by the Governor-General in Ottawa but, the date has yet to be announced.
