A senior Conservative party member says Prime Minister Stephen Harper could call a federal election as early as September 2nd.
The well-placed party official says no decision has been made yet, but an election call is highly likely sometime within the next 2 to 4 weeks. According to this official, Harper could pull the plug on his minority government immediately after the Labour Day weekend, or wait until shortly after Parliament resumes on September 15th.
The Prime Minister will not make a final decision until after he meets with opposition leaders to determine whether there’s any chance his government will be able to forge ahead with its agenda during the fall. The tete-a-tetes have not yet been scheduled but our contact says Harper would ideally like to meet the three opposition leaders sometime next week.
Harper has been blaming opposition parties in recent days for paralyzing Parliament and Tory insiders say there’s little chance opposition leaders will be able to change his mind.
