Province may require landfills to capture methane Gas

The Alaska Highway News is reporting this afternoon that landfills in the Peace could face costly upgrades because of new environmental upgrades.

The report says the province is conducting consultations for new regulations that would require landfills that accept more than 10,000 tonnes of garbage a year to be audited so the ammount of methane gas they produce can be guaged.

The Peace River Regional District says the Beseborough and Fort St. John Landfills are too small, and upgrades would be to expensive.

If a landfill spews more than 1,000 tones of methane gas annualy it would have to spend millions of dollars on upgrades to capture that gas. Two uses for the gas would be to heat homes or flare it.
