Neufeld: Coalbed Methane Drilling

According to Energy Minister Richard Neufeld, “radical environmentalists” have created needless fear, about drilling for coalbed methane in northwestern B-C.
Mr. Neufeld believes it was environmentalists who forced Shell Canada’s decision to suspend plans for exploratory drilling in the so-called “Sacred Headwaters” of the of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers.
However, as earlier noted, municipal governments and the public have also voiced opposition, while two area First Nations told Shell drilling plans had be called off to clear the way for meaningful discussions to take place.
Coalbed methane produces natural gas from underground coal seams, which trap methane gases under water pressure.
Critics fear drilling in the Sacred Headwaters could pollute the three rivers but, Mr. Neufeld says B-C is not in the business of polluting its waterways.
