A family bicycling from Alaska to South American will make a stop in Fort St. John Sunday.

Father John Vogel, Mother Nancy and their 10 year-old twins Davy and Daryl started out on June 8th from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on their bikes and expect to arrive at their destination at the southern tip of South Americawithin 2 1/2 years.

Once they complete their journey the two sons will have set a world record as “Youngest Persons to Cycle the PanAmerican Highway”.

The Vogel family is no stranger to long-distance bicycle touring. In June 2007, they arrived home in Idaho after spending a year pedaling 9,300 miles through 19 US states and 4 Mexican states.

John and Nancy have pedaled an estimated 200,000 miles through sixteen countries in the past thirty years.

Davy and Daryl are in fourth grade at an elementary school in Boise, and Nancy teaches Special Education at a local high school. John, a long-time teacher, is currently not teaching.

The family intends to use their educational background to bring the world to under-privileged children in New York City through Reach the World (RTW).

Reach the World is an educational, nonprofit organization with the mission of linking students in under-funded schools to online global expeditions . These expeditions have the power to expand learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. The cyclists will be linked to classrooms via RTW’s interactive website and live Internet chats.
