The union representing workers at B-C Safeway stores has issued 72-hour strike notice, against the grocery retailer.
However, because a mediator remains involved in negotiations, an immediate walkout is unlikely.
United Food and Commercial Workers Union spokesman Andy Neufeld says, ten thousand Safeway employees are seeking a wage increase and, removal of a two-tiered wage system.
Those are the same goals the union had, when it negotiated a new contract with the Overwaitea/Save-On grocery chain and, Mr. Neufeld admits some progress was made on wages but, the tiered wage system remains, in the new deal.
