Kirby Dreher Leading BC Women's Amateure Golf Championship

Setting a new women’s course record of 6-under par 67 on the Williams Lake Golf & Tennis Club course has propelled Kirby Dreher into a four stroke lead midway through the 72-hole British Columbia Women’s Amateur championship. Holding a four shot margin on defending champion Kira Meixner of Richmond, Dreher is halfway home to becoming the first provincial golf champion from Fort St. John and the most northerly winner since former LPGA veteran Lisa Young of Prince Rupert won the BC Women’s Amateur in 1979-80-81.

"I had lots of chances for birdies," said Dreher after a round of seven birdies and only one bogey. "I played decent; my goal was to just play better than yesterday. Tomorrow I’ll play with the same energy as today–hit the fairways and the greens and still shoot pretty low." Dreher began the day two shots behind Meixner, her former Kent State University teammate, who posted a second round par 73, and Langley’s Sue Kim, who shot a shocking 6-over 79 to slip back into a tie for fifth place. Alone in third at 143 is junior Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam, the only other player in the field of 50 to post two rounds (71-72) under par. Kyla Inaba of Kelowna is alone in fourth place at 146, a stroke ahead of Kim and Vancouver’s Dominique Pytlewski, who share fifth place at 1-over par 147.

Recently crowned BC Senior champion Jackie Little of Port Alberni, a five-time BC Amateur winner and reigning two-time defending Mid-Amateur title holder, leads the Mid-Amateur competition by one-stroke (151) over first round leader, Kim Evans of Terrace, while Erika Ramberg of Vancouver is in third at 156 followed by 2007 Canadian Senior Women’s champion, Alison Murdoch at 158.

The BC championship calls for 72 holes of stroke play; the Mid-Amateur division, open to female amateur golfers age 25 years of age and older as of July 1, 2008, is 54 holes. The top four finishers will represent B.C at the Royale Cup Nationale Women’s Amateur Championship at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, MB. July 28 – August 1.
