Big Tobacco Fines

Two of Canada’s largest tobacco companies are going to pay huge fines after pleading guilty today to offences under the Excise Act over contraband cigarettes. The companies also agreed to settle civil suits against them, by the Federal, Ontario, and Quebec governments.

The combined cost of the fines and civil suit payments adds up to $1.15 billion. The guilty pleas come after a long-running RCMP investigation.
