With the announcement that the North Central Plywood Plant in Prince George will not be re-built, Canfor has announced a new project for Fort St. John. The Board of Directors announced today that they have approved an expenditure of $13.5 Million to construct a wood residue energy facility at Canfor’s Fort St. John Sawmill.
Canfor will hold a conference call tomorrow morning at 7:30am and we hope to learn more about the facility at that time.
BC Hydro issued a call for proposals that will utilize forest-based biomas, including sawmill residues, logging debris and other residual wood for power production. The BC Hydro Bioenergy Strategy and the BC Energy Plan is intended to help address the effects of the mountain pine beetle infestation. At the moment there is no information to confirm that Canfor’s announcement has anything to do with the BC Hydro call earlier this year.
