The B.C. Forest Service has made short work of the largest blaze reported in the Province so far this summer.
The Lakit Mountain fire, which covers about 3.5 square km near Fort Steele, east of Cranbrook, is now 90% contained. Helicopters and air tankers bombarded the fire with water and retardant last night after flames jumped Highways 93 and 95, cutting off travel between Fort Steele and the town of Wasa, 20 km north.
Several other fires were sparked yesterday in the Southern Interior, including a 10 hectare fire near Lumby, east of Vernon, and a small blaze caused by an abandoned campfire near the historic Myra Canyon outside Kelowna.
All this fire activity may have you wondering how the Peace Region is faring, having received less than 30% of normal precipitation in the past 2 months. However, a Fire Information Officer with the Prince George Fire Centre says that, so far, everything is pretty much under control in this region.
Jillian Chimko says the danger level remains high in the Peace, and she’s expecting more warm, dry weather over the next week, with the possibility of lightning over the weekend. Chimko also confirms some local crews have headed South to help out with the fires in Southern B.C.

Chimko adds that when facing warm weather as we are right now, it’s particularly important to keep a close eye on those campfires.
