A 55 year-old man is dead after an accident involving an ultralight aircraft in Central Alberta.
Larry Lloyd Merrett of Fort St. John, B.C. was practising taxiing the aircraft with an on-ground flight instructor when the plane took off. RCMP say the plane remained airborne for about a kilometre before it nose-dived into the ground from about 30 metres.
It happened in a farmer’s field about 3 km west of Caroline, Alta. Merrett was a certified pilot but had limited experience with ultralight aircraft.
RCMP say the exact cause of the crash hasn’t been determined and Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
