The companies in charge of maintaining BC’s Highways are coming under attack in a new campaign demanding more accountability from private contractors.
The BC Government and Service Employees Union has rounded up support from 39 municipalities demanding tougher standards. BCGEU President Darryl Walker says BC Taxpayers spend more than 300 million dollars a year on these contracts.
"The government needs to understand their responsibilities to hold the contractors accountable to make sure that the roads are in the condition that they actually need to be."
Earlier this year, the BCGEU – which represents about two thousand road workers – launched a campaign titled “You be the Judge”. A seven minute video outlining the work maintenance contractors are supposed to be doing year round is featured on their website at www.bcgeu.ca
The municipalities of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek have joined the protest from the Peace Region.
