Ten Digit Dialing Update

Results from a Telus survey show that 87% of local phone calls in B.C. and Alberta are now being made by customers dialing 10 digit numbers. The survey was taken June 30th, just one week after the start of the so-called permissive dialing period, when callers who use only 7 digits hear a recorded reminder to use 10. The permissive period ends September 7th and, beginning the following day, any call made without including the area code will not be connected.

The new system with additional area codes is being implemented because of the growing demand for phone numbers.

The public is again reminded that all 3 digit numbers, like 911, will remain the same and will not require the inclusion of an area code.
