There are several wildfires reported now in the South Peace, the largest one being about 30 kilometers west of Tumbler Ridge. It was discovered yesterday in the Windfall Creek area and, like the others in the region, was started by lightning. At last report it covered about 120 hectares but has not caused any serious problems in the area.
In the meantime, the province-wide focus remains on the wildfire west of Jackass Mountain, south of Lytton in the Fraser Canyon. Two flanks have now been contained, but the blaze has taken a run to the east. Forestry officials say the fire is raging in terrain so steep that rocks and dirt fall when roots are burnt out from under trees. Sixty firefighters, supported by air and ground crews, have been battling the blaze since Sunday.
It was sparked by a motorhome that caught fire on the Trans-Canada Highway. Local area motorists headed in that direction should take note that the route through the Fraser Canyon remains closed.
