The provincial government has granted environmental approval, to a Pacific Trail Pipelines LP proposal. It’s for the construction of a 463 kilometer pipeline, between Kitimat and Summit Lake, north of Prince George. Environment and Energy Ministers Barry Penner and Richard Neufeld, made the decision, following a review by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. The 91-centimetre-diameter pipeline has a 1.1 billion dollar price tag and is intended to link the proposed Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, with the Spectra Energy gas transmission system. The terminal would receive ship-borne imports of super-cooled natural gas. The proposed project, however, has a few more hurdles to overcome and, is still subject to federal environmental approval. It must also obtain provincial and federal permits and, the provincial environmental approval is contingent on about a half a dozen proponent conditions. They go to monitoring, controlling and mitigating water quality, erosion, fish habitat losses and wildlife habitat.
