Denny Morrison claimed a silver medal on Friday, at the final world cup event of the season.

The Fort St. John native placed second in the men's 1500 metres, clocking in at a time of 1:46.12, his best 1500m time of the season. Morrison finished about a second behind winner Shani Davis of the United States, with Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands in third.

The competition continues on Saturday and Sunday, with skaters set to return to Heerenveen for the World Allround Championships March 19-21.

Meanwhile, Canadian speed-skating star Jeremy Wotherspoon is expected to announce his official retirement from the sport on Saturday. Wotherspoon had fully intended to retire at the end of the season, and was planning to cap his career in the Netherlands this weekend, but couldn't race because of groin surgery.
