Hundreds of Fort St. John kids used the power of song in hopes of changing the minds of adults in the community.

It was all to kick start the City's green initiative called 'Be the Change'.

City staff, activists, kids and parents attended the event held at the North Peace Cultural Centre on Thursday night.

Tzeporah Berman was the keynote speaker, beginning the night reinforcing the need for change, but ending with an uplifting message of hope.

She says even an oil and gas-based city, like Fort St. John, can become environmentally sustainable.

Berman has been named "one of the most prominent environmentalists in Canada" by the Globe and Mail. She also appeared in Leonardo DiCaprio's documentary, The 11th Hour. She's now heading to Amsterdam, to help Greenpeace spearhead a global environmental movement.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bruce Lantz says he hopes the event sparks small changes in residents and even large corporations.

The City is holding an information session on the official Community Energy and Emissions Plan on Friday night.

The plan is all in an effort to reduce Fort St. John's carbon emissions by 12% by 2030.

The adult-oriented event will be held at the Whole Wheat and Honey Cafe starting at 7:00 p.m.

Looks a lot like the city is endorsing this individual and her agenda. "For example, I’m opposed to the expansion of our highways and bridges instead of funding public transit. I don’t support their decision on Gateway. I don’t support their expanding the oil-and-gas industry in the north. I think we should be phasing out fossil fuels, and we should be phasing out and not increasing coal mining. I think the fact that British Columbia is allowing the mining of coal and then exporting it to China to be burned, while saying that they won’t built any coal plants here, is hypocrisy." April 17, 2009 Straight.com Interview by Mathew Burrows. She was also pivitol in an anti -logging campaign in 1993. To summerize, she is against highway expansion, oil and gas , coal mining, logging and the use of fossil fuels. I wonder who's going to pay all the taxes in the region, if our industries continue to be bashed and trashed by the green movement..?

hope for green change

We as parents were at the NPCC on Thursday ONLY because we were told that our children were singing in a choir and of course we would go. But we were also not informed from the school what this event was about or given that much notice for that matter. Then when we go there to see our children sing it was a more of a finger pointing session on how we are ruining or environment for our kids and that the oil and gas industry as well as the logging is one of the biggest part of the pollution. As far as I an concerned we were all ambushed to go and our children were used to do so. I can not speak for everyone but I am sure that if we knew more information on what it was about half the people there would not have attened. Next time the school has a part in any more extra carircular activities i will not be letting my child participate. I am one of many that is PISSED .

City Paid?

Who else would pay for this? It's looks/sounds like the green propaganda machine is just getting started.

i think its time for the

i think its time for the city to answer for this ..i want to know WHO PAID THIS WOMANS FARE UP HERE????.i work in the oil and gas and im sure as heck dont want my tax dollars used for this crap...bruce time to fess up...........
