Lakepoint celebrates 50 years of Oilmen's golf

This weekend, Lakepoint Golf and Country Club helped celebrate 50 years of Oilmen’s golf. From Thursday, June 7 until Saturday, June 9, over 300 golfers hit the course alongside Charlie Lake, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Oilmen’s Golf Tournament, which features a slew of friendly competition among fellow Oilmen in 18 separate flights.

In the Fort St. John Petroleum Association Championship flight, Justin Mckinnon emerged victorious following 4 rounds of match-play, defeating heavy favourite Buddy Streeper in a final 18-hole championship showdown.

Mckinnon earned himself a 3-2 victory, meaning he was lead by three holes with only two left to play. His victory was really cemented along the back nine of the course, winning his final four holes en route to the Championship Flight victory.

He spoke about his fellow competitors, as well as how lady luck also made an appearance throughout the weekend.

"I played some tough competitors this weekend, especially in the finals where I hung on to beat Buddy. I was lucky today, made a few big putts and went on to win my last four holes. I also put myself at a disadvantage starting my final round, as I showed up late, missing the first hole. Luckily I birdied hole two to pull even entering hole three."

When asked about any shots that stood out in his mind, this year’s champ talked about the events that took place on his final hole of the tournament.

"I hooked my drive into the trees, but had a great recovery, hitting my five-wood 200 plus yards, then tapping in a twelve-footer for a par."

This was Mckinnon’s second year playing in the tournament, and second in the Championship Flight. This year, the victor had to defeat Gene Danyluk, Darren Leflar, Kevin Mcnee and finally Buddy Streeper to earn the tournament championship.

In the first flight, sponsored by Weatherford, first place went to Tom West, who defeated Gary Decker in Saturday’s final round of 18 holes.

In the Halliburton second Flight, Jeremy Clothier beat Jim McDonald in Saturday’s finals.

Lakepoint Golf and Country Club General Manager Troy Knight shared his thoughts on how the tournament played out.

"I think generally it was a really good weekend, especially with the weather Wednesday and predictions for the days of the tournament. The course was really wet but the Oilmen were all very respectful of the course and it was a lot of fun…I think it goes to show a very respectful relationship we have with the Oilmen."

The Lakepoint Golf and Country Club has been a host of the tournament for over a few decades, something Knight attributes to the very strong relationship between the two organizations.
