Fatal drilling rig accident near Dawson Creek

There was a fatal accident yesterday in the Peace Region oil patch. A 32-year-old man is dead after a drilling rig fall in Alberta, about 40 kilometres east of Dawson Creek.

Calgary-based company Calmena Energy Services Incorporated says the accident happened yesterday during the drilling of a surface hole. It says operations were immediately suspended and both the Spirit River RCMP and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety are conducting separate investigations.

The company also says the victim’s family has been notified of the accident, but his name has not yet been released.

The drilling rig, owned and operated by Calmena – which has operations in the U.S., Mexico, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Canada – was drilling on land leased by Birchcliff Energy.
