Fort St. John Sikh Temple celebrating 25 years

The local Sikh temple is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend. The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple and Cultural Society was founded in 1987, and is located on 90 Street at the corner of 100 Avenue.

To commemorate the occasion, the entirety of the Guru Granth Sahib – the religious text of Sikhism – will be read non-stop, without interruption. The reading starts today, and will take approximately 48 hours to complete.

The ceremony will also include Kirtan, which is Sikh devotional music, which will be read after the reading. A free communal meal called Guru Ka Lungar will be served each day from 12 – 2 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m.

Local elected officials have been invited to join in the celebration, as well as members of the original membership that may have moved away. Mayor Lori Ackerman is expected to speak at lunch Saturday, and MLA Pat Pimm at lunch Sunday.
