Peace Region receives funding for crop research

Crop production in the Peace Region may soon be growing, thanks to new funding to support research trials. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced yesterday that grain growers in the Peace Region will receive up to $520,000 in new funding to support research trials for new crops and varieties.

The research trials will look into finding varieties of crops that can grow in our area's challenging conditions, and figure out how to market them. Those include testing lentils, dry beans and winter wheat as well as new varieties of canola, cereals, pulses, and flax as potential new crops that will be resilient in the northern climate.

Clair Langlois, research manager for the BC Grain Producers Association, explains how difficult it is for most crops to grow here.

"The Peace River region places tremendous environmental stresses on the crops growing here, from cold soil conditions at plant, to highly variable growing seasons due also to our northern latitude," she says. "This work is very important to determine which crops and varieties can handle the kinds of environmental stresses and climate variability of our region."

So far, the trials have support from the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program for the next two years.
