Treaty 8 receives further funding to look into wind farm

Following the provincial government's April announcement of $40,000 for Treaty 8 to look into a a wind farm project, the organization has received another grant. Treaty 8 will receive up to $18,750 from the Northern Development Initiative Trust towards the feasibility study for the Mount Lavitah Wind Farm project.

The proposal include building a wind monitoring tower on Mount Lavitah, located just southeast of the District of Mackenzie, south of the Pine Pass.

In a previous interview with Moose FM/, Treaty 8 Land and Resources Director Kieran Broderick said they have been collecting data for the past four years, and are using this funding to hire a wind energy company to analyze that data. They will look at overlapping tenures, and other constraints, as well as a layout design for the potential turbine, potential costs, and the electrical layout and grid.

"Once we have all this work done, then we'll move to put together a business case, and it will determine the viability of this project moving forward," he said.

Broderick hopes that the Treaty will have a better indication of the project by this fall.
