Backcountry is one of British Columbia’s largest hunting, fishing and outdoor supply stores. The Fort St. John area is home to some of the best hunting and fishing opportunities in North America and often referred to as “The Serengeti of the North”.

New radar signs going up in Fort St. John

Driving around Fort St. John, you will soon see eight new radar boards around schools and playgrounds. That's thanks to two companies, who came forward to sponsor the signs.

Shell Canada sponsored five signs, and Oculus Transport Ltd. sponsored three signs.

Oculus, formerly Koda Transport, made its sponsorship back in January, and the city has been waiting for better weather to install them. Three radar signs cost the company $9,240. David Ergang with Oculus Transport Ltd. believes that if oil and service companies spend millions of dollars a years ensuring workers are safe, they should do the same for their community.

"My suggestion for the community is to start doing the same for our children and grandchildren," he says. "I believe a step in the right direction is for various companies in Fort St. John to sponsor radar boards."

According to Mayor Lori Ackerman, research has shown that survival rates increase dramatically when a vehicle slows from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, "therefore drivers must be aware of their speed". She adds, "Shell Canada and Oculus Transport Ltd. are showing the community that families matter to them and we very much appreciate their community involvement."

Keep an eye out, as the signs will be installed before the middle of the month.
