Backcountry is one of British Columbia’s largest hunting, fishing and outdoor supply stores. The Fort St. John area is home to some of the best hunting and fishing opportunities in North America and often referred to as “The Serengeti of the North”.

Alaska Highway closed in several locations north of Watson Lake

The Alaska Highway is closed between Watson Lake and Teslin, and Haines Junction and Destruction Bay. The closures come after heavy rain in the area caused several washouts and mudslides with the worst hit area between Watson Lake and Teslin.

According to the Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works, it could take days before repairs are finished.

Here is a more detailed look at sections of the Highway that are closed from CBC North.

Alaska Highway north of Rancheria:
Equipment was being mobilized and bridge parts being assembled and transported to the site on Saturday. As soon as water levels allow, crews will begin channelling Canyon Creek from four channels into one. Once this work is completed an engineering assessment can be completed and a temporary detour constructed. This process is expected to take days.

Alaska Highway south of Rancheria:
Crews opened a lane to Watson Lake Friday night for emergency travel only.

Alaska Highway from Haines Junction to Destruction Bay:
The road is now open to one lane travel with pilot car.

No one was hurt in the washouts or landslides, but travelers are stranded in severals areas along the highway and officials are asking the public not to travel in the area.  For more updates on the road, you can visit www.511yukon.ca
