Skilled worker task force for B.C.

In a continued effort to bring skilled workers to the province, Premier Christy Clark announced this morning the creation of an Immigration Task Force. The crew will review all of the province's current immigration programs to find ways to improve them and bring more skilled workers and investments to B.C.

Those include the Provincial Nominee Program, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Immigrant Investor Program. Task force members will also work with industry and sector associations, settlement service providers, community associations and other relevant groups.

Clark says the province needs workers to fill "more than a million" job openings over the next decade. That need is especially prevalent in the north, with thousands of jobs to fill and a lack of skilled people to fill them. Despite this, so far, the northernmost task force member is in Prince George: Tim McEwan, CEO of Initiatives Prince George.

The nine task force members will start work immediately, and will provide a report by March 31, 2012.
