FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Huskies lost on home ice last night to the Fairview Flyers.

The Huskies looked early on in the game. Matthew Assassin scored in the first period with a solid shot top corner at 11:15 to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Adam Bowie had the assist on the first period’s lone tally.

In the second frame, the Flyers would answer back with a goal 36 seconds in. However, Apsassin again scored with yet another shot that went high glove side assisted by Gary Loewen and Jacob Lang. Apsassin nearly made it 3-1 in the last minute of the second period when he took a stretch pass on a breakaway, but was stoned by Fairview netminder.

In the third period, the Huskies looked alright initially, but quickly started to collapse. Fairview scored three unanswered goals in the frame. Though the Huskies started to battle back from their slump in the final five minutes, it wasn’t enough as the Flyers held on for a 4-2 victory.

Head coach Todd Alexander said that the Huskies looked great for the first two periods of last night’s game before things took a turn. “Our first two periods were actually really good, really happy. Shift lengths were going along, everything was going along really well for us. They had a short bench and they were just kind of playing a simple game. I felt that we had a solid, solid forty minutes heading into the third period. Then all of a sudden, we just decided to play our own game. Our shift lengths got up to about a minute and forty [seconds], and we lost our energy level and allowed them to catch up and play in the game a little bit. The last two goals were just total, complete missed coverages in our own zone. A lot of that comes from being out there too long.”

The Huskies are back on home ice on Saturday night for their final home game of the 2016 calendar year. The Huskies take on the Beaverlodge Blades at the North Peace Arena at 8:00 p.m.
