It was an important opening game of the series, as the winner of the two-game series earns a spot in the Tier 2 Alberta Soccer Association Provincial Championship tournament.
The game started off back-and-forth, with the teams getting a feel for one another.
Finally, following a few scoring chances, Fort St. John opened the scoring off a nice passing play, taking a 1-0 lead.
It didn’t’ take long for the Blue and Yellow Northern Strikers to double that lead, as some great ball movement led to the team's second goal, ending the first half with the Strikers leading 2-0.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Northern Strikers added four more goals, compared to the lone goal scored by Grande Prairie, resulting in the 6-1 finals.
However, credit must be given to the visiting team, who took to the field despite a short bench, which limited them to just 10 players.
The series will now shift to Grande Prairie for game-two, with the winner, booking their ticket to compete in the Tier 2 ASA Provincial Championship in Red Deer, Alta, from August 17-19.
